Your typical muti-story telephone building in a large city had literally square blocks of floor space filled with rack after rack of this equipment – the first few times you saw a typical “equipment” floor it was hard to grasp the scale of it . . .
When Electronic Switching Systems came into service the bulk of the the ESS equipment were the cabinets being used to make the physical connections the the phone lines – which eliminated the need for 95+ percent of space needed for equipment – with the advent of fiber optics the space requirements need for all the copper wire runs were eliminated as well – that 10 story tall 1/2 block wide – one block long telephone company building – once crammed full of equipment?? -pretty much empty now . . .
