The short answer is there is no short answer – yes I know that’s not an answer . . . There are so many variables that it is very hard to say “definitively” this will work for you. I used the MFJ 16010 from DXENGINEERING on a long wire app. 60 feet long – no unun ( this is where you want to be with a long wire ) – [ A long wire is “seen” as having a 450 OHM resistance and you want to be somewhere in the range of 50 OHMS going to the radio ] – just the simplest wire antenna run in with a banana plug into the unit – banana plug and wire to a Realistic DX160 and it made a difference – you have to change settings depending on the frequency you are trying to listen to – but on that set up with that radio it would make a difference – changing settings on it would take “is that a signal?” laying in the noise floor to something you could hear and understand . . .
So Bruce – is SWL worth the effort? Absolutely it is – the mainstream media quite simply is lying liars lying – I urge everyone to “out source” their information “supply” as much as you can – listen to as many different sources as you can – discern their agenda – THINK about the information and then consider making a decision.
Finalized the layout for my radio/junk room – and with Christmas upon us ( my Blushing Bride is keeping me busy with all that stuff ) I hope to get the pile of junk and boxes into some order by the end of January – I have an Airspy SDR from Nevada Radio UK set up on the dining room table currently – my Blushing Bride IS NOT thrilled to say the least – LMAO!
But Bruce – my new “super high-tech jet fighter” short wave radio comes with a telescoping whip antenna – what more do I need?
Believe it or not – something as simple as this Kaito T-1 will make a difference – the more signal you capture – the more your radio has to work with – and the closer you get that signal to what it is YOUR radio wants to work with – the better you will hear it.
