June 8th 1966 – The Topeka Tornado

Drove from Omaha to Wichita the Saturday following this – we were routed around the whole area by some very serious young men with guns and green clothes on – the only thing you could see was the capitol building dome with a hole in it – never got any closer than that to any damaged areas . . .

Forbes Field ( out the south end of town ) was not directly affected by the tornado provided personnel to help with relief efforts as well as providing “airport” services for some rush medical supplies.

You can see the edge of Forbes Field on the map below. Two takeaways from my limited point of view – 1. What an absolute mess to clean up. – 2. Folks sure paid a LOT more attention to weather warnings for the next several seasons.

The hardest part is to believe it was 56 years ago . . .
