Just for Fun – What’s a Snub Gun?

While participation in SG² is open to all revolver enthusiasts, regardless of barrel length, we thought it would be fun to discuss what people consider a snub gun, also known as a snubby revolver.

Back when revolvers ruled the roost, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department posted the ten top-scoring shooters in the quarterly “qualifications” by category of gun. Revolvers were divided into 4″ or longer and less than four inches.

There’s probably no argument that the quintessential American snub gun is a revolver with a nominally 2″ barrel. “Nominally” because such barrels range from the 1.875″ barrels on guns such as S&W’s Chief Special to 2.25″ on Ruger’s shorter SP101s.

Some people argue for including barrel lengths up to 2.5 inches. This may be based on the fact that S&W’s introduction of the 2.5″ Model 19 and subsequent 2.5″ Model 66 resulted in acceptance of that barrel length as a snub gun in PPC competition. For whatever it’s worth:

Back when the privately operated National Law Enforcement Training Center was developing its system of handgun retention, it was noted that, while a 2″ barrel pretty much denied a disarmer any practical leverage, the extra half inch was enough to shift the equation.

In the mid 1970’s, FBI briefly issued S&W Model 10 revolvers with 2.5″ barrels. They were unpopular with agents because of the short throw of the extractor rod and because, with their short sight radius, it was difficult to get a sharp sight picture with them in low light. They were subsequently replaced with 3″ Model 13 revolvers, which remained the standard duty guns until the transition to autoloaders.

A few years ago, S&W offered some of their J-frame revolvers with 2.5″ barrels. They must not have been very popular as they seem to have been dropped from the lineup.

For those of you who were wondering about me saying something about NOT carrying a 5″ 1911 all the time – What do YOU think I’m carrying as a primary??

I admit it – instead of a 1911 ALL the time with a S&W 642 in my pocket – I’m carrying 2 ( or 3 ) snubbys on occasion – I am not saying I’m addicted to S&W 642’s – but we are in the middle of a complicated relationship – LMOA!

I actually thought I was getting a 2021 St Patrick’s Day commemorative – OOPS . . . Not paying attention and in a hurry and not wide awake – great combination for ordering stuff on Amazon – I ended up with 12 cases of ramen soup that way – I like ramen so it worked out all right . . .

Fit and finish are excellent

The colors are vibrant – the camera does not do them justice . . .

Cellphone kept focusing on the handle not the blade . . . took 8 or 9 shots – this is the best one – LOL!

And a good look at the logo . . .

It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to put one together – it can be simple – or pretty complete – a large one can go in a corner of the trunk of your car – a small one in your glove box – and you don’t have to spend a lot for a waterproof case – check the Apache line from Harbor Freight – need ideas for what to put in your survival kit? – go <<<HERE>>> or <<<HERE>>> to get some ideas – you don’t have to get everything at once – a few items every week – a month or two – and it’s done . . .

Or just pretend you are the US Air Force and go to Amazon and throw money at it – LMAO!

It’s far better to have a little kit put together and NEVER need it – than to NEED it and NOT have it . . .

Do You Ulu??

I was stumbling through Amazon and ran across this . . .

An Ulu by Hibben – with a pakka wood handle and a sheath . . .

I started using a Ulu in the kitchen awhile back – my grand daughter picked me one up in Alaska as a souvenir for me – and I started using it – they are great in the kitchen – this Hibben comes with a sheath – personally I would not carry it – to each their own . . .

The Hibben has better ergonomics than a “regular” Ulu – and the blade is sharpened on both sides like a normal knife rather than a chisel edge like a “regular” Ulu – The Hibben is sharp A F – OH MY . . .

If you do the “kitchen thing” and you appreciate knives – my suggestion would be to pick up one of the “souvenir” Ulu’s – they are real inexpensive – 10 to 15 dollars – if you like the feel and the methodology of the way they cut – pick up the Hibben – at 39 bucks it is one incredible kitchen knife – it won’t replace any of your knives – it compliments a set of knives simply because some chopping / dicing tasks it does so well – give one a try and let me know what you think – Me? – I really like them . . .

Found a Hibben Ulu with a Rosewood handle – Hmmm . . .

Two For You from BladeHQ : Old School / New School : Real Cool

Y’all didn’t know I was a poet – did ya??

We are going to look at two stilettos I picked up from BladeHQ – and they are both stilettos yet they are very different . . .

They are both automatic or what are commonly called switchblade knives . . .

The top one is a 9 inch SKM – Killer Bee – real old school cool . . .

The bottom one is a Keshaw Launch 8 – new school cool . . .

Handling both of them – the “Killer Bee” takes me back 50 plus years – good crisp button – the blade comes out nice – the bolster lock was like old home week – just too cool . . .

The Launch 8 from Kershaw? I’m all in – the more forward button allows you a better hand position – very crisp and positive button – blade swing out? – you could use it as the tactile definition of “Snick” – I’m in Lust – as cool as the “Killer Bee” is – the Launch 8 just totally out classes it – as much as I love the “classic” pattern of the “Killer Bee” and will continue to collect old school stilettos – the Kershaw Launch 8 in my new EDC – just that simple – and I am a fan of the Sicilian Pattern stiletto . . .

I have to admit the work that is being done today with acrylics is a LOT better looking than 50 years ago – you had 4 choices – dark horn – tan horn – brittle black plastic – or wood . . .

This next one gives you a close look at the bolster – you see the curve at the rear ( or bottom in this pic ) – so when you pivot the bolster clockwise as you are looking at it – the right front corner ahead of the rivet will lift the look off of the blade – old school cool . . .

Here’s a close look at the Launch 8 – button and front bolsters – the button both releases the blade ( Snick! – love it ) and then releases the blade to close it – and the carbon fiber insert just adds a nice look to it . . .

Not a polished blade – Kershaw is calling it “stone washed” – it’s growing on me . . .

I actually have quite a few knives and a friend told me to start doing some reviews of some of the oldies and goodies I have – and show all you folks some of them – so here you go – but before I go here is one I had totally forgot about – was looking for something else entirely and found it in a box of “stuff” I was digging through – it was literally gone AND forgotten . . .

Picked it up in a shop on the north side of Custer S.D. probably 10 years ago or longer – Duck Brand doesn’t really exist anymore but you can still find these under various logo’s – <<< CLICK HERE – this search page will get you started >>> – and remember – If YOU can’t decide which knife to buy – buy them both – YOU have MY permission . . .

I had a dear friend tell his wife just exactly that – “But Dear! – Bruce told me if I couldn’t decide which one of these pistols to buy – just buy them both – he said that I had his permission!” From my point of view I had a very interesting and spirited conversation with the young lady – let’s just say VERY spirited and leave it at that . . .

Some women have NO sense of humor . . .
