Tarp Tent Camping

Camping season is just around the corner – St Patty’s day is only about 20 days away – ran across a few videos of one of my favorite camping “method” – Folks, I present to you the the humble tarp tent . . .

For what you would spend on a tent you can go to Harbor Freight and pick up a bunch of tarps and rope – just don’t forget to “flame melt” the end of the poly rope or it will fuzz on you . . .

PRO TIP!! – make your ropes up ahead of time – And here’s how . . .

Get 3 cans of spray paint – red – blue – and green . . .

Think in five foot increments – make a fifteen foot rope and paint the ends red – red has 3 letters in it – a rope with red ends has 3×5 or fifteen feet of length – 20 foot ropes ? paint the ends blue – blue has 4 letters in it – 4×5 or 20 foot of length – and make some 25 foot lengths and paint the ends green – green has 5 letters in it – 5×5 or 25 feet of length.

You can can experiment with the different “tent” designs and pretty much figure out how many ropes of what different lengths you need to set up your basic tarp “tent” or shelter and just roll those up in the tarp when your done – simple – quick – easy. . .

And once you settle on a design? If it needs a pole or three to make it work – pre-fab some lengths of wooden dowels of broomsticks – makes it a lot easier . . .

Rain? – doesn’t take much effort to put a tarp across the “front” to give you a rain fly – Bugs and mosquitos? Get you a piece of netting to cover your open end(s) . . .

Don’t forget a tarp for a ground cloth!

Tarp “tenting” is my favorite way of camping – about the only time I use a tent is when the shelter has more than me in it and the other person is not comfortable with the concept or time is an issue – I have an itty bitty little dome tent than can fit two people – I use when I must – LOL!

This last video? Did just exactly this for years until surplus blankets went to over 4 bucks apiece – and no I won’t admit to how long ago THAT was – that and sleeping bag technology advanced to such a point that they simply weighed less – took up less space – and kept you warmer . . .

Picked up a new fixed blade camping knife – gonna try to get a review put together along with a recipe for all y’all this weekend . . .

Have Fun! – Run the Gun! – and remember – Fish Heads are Cheap!!
