Mike Rowe lays it out as simple as it can be . . .
It’s real simple – acquire a skill set and become proficient at it – where to start?? Go down to your local union hall and talk to them – if you have ANY mechanical aptitude at all – you are on your way – no sugar coating here folks – it can be tough for some kids – you have to show up – on time – sober – and heaven forbid – you might get dirty and actually have to work . . .
I ran my butt off at work to train with a stationary engineer for a year besides doing my job – studied hard and passed the licensing exam for this jurisdiction – what did it get me?? 80K a year with a 3 1/2 day work week! No glitz and glamour – pretty much by any standard a nasty work environment and I can work as long as I want after I retire – right now there are 81 openings for stationary engineers in the area – I’m sorting through offers now for the best pay/benefit package with the lightest work load – looks like I will almost match my current salary PLUS collect my full social security for as long as I want to or not . . .
