F102 Delta Dagger
The first of the SAGE System interceptors . . .
And then there’s this . . .
The F-102 was the first supersonic AND delta winged interceptor – except as produced the YF-102 ( the prototypes ) just couldn’t quite make it! – .98 mach was just about it. . . Transonic Drag was higher than expected – the transonic drag rabbit hole is HERE – pretty interesting in a dry sorta way. To overcome the issue the design team applied a recently discovered “thing” called area rule – and that rabbit hole is HERE – it was applied to the YF-102A prototypes and it pretty much worked for them. Convair then began modifying existing air-frames and incorporating those changes into further production models – Convair ended up with a pretty decent production run once the kinks were worked out – right at 1000 were made! Pilots really liked the smooth ride of both the delta wings Convair made for the century series – the 102 and the 106 – because of the wing loading of the delta – and that rabbit hole is HERE – say Hi to Alice for me . . . And fair warning about rabbit holes – the F-102 has app. 5 tons (10,000 lbs) of tubes and “stuff” ( avionics for you normal folks ) that literally made the aircraft an integral part of the SAGE system – when the SAGE posts drop – we are going down the rabbit hole – and through the “looking glass” – just letting you know in advance – LMAO!!

Western Field was Montgomery Wards “house” brand of guns and ammo and stuff . . .
Wards used to carry a good line of stuff as did Sears – I remember the tubs full of 8mm Mauser and Springfield 03’s and Enfields – What in the hell have we allowed the communists to do to us???
Where offal such as this would be introduced into congress and the enslavement going on in Virginia – California and other communist enclaves would even be considered and the oxygen thieves that signed onto it would be convicted of sedition and or felony conspiracy to commit ?????? F-101 Voodoo
Could not find a lot – but here’s some stuff –
The Voodoo was to be a penetration fighter as well as an interceptor but with the B-52 entering service SAC lost interest in the aircraft – The Voodoo went on to be used with Air Defense Command’s SAGE system – Semi Automatic Ground Environment – the Voodoo soldiered on until the late 70’s with Air National Guard units and into the early 80’s with the Canadian Air Force – it was also quite capable as a reconnaissance platform – a lot of the work done during the Cuban Missile Crisis was done with it as well as a tremendous amount during the Vietnam war.
The top photo below is an interceptor variant – the bottom one is a reconnaissance platform – the nose modification for the camera bay was very distinct . . .
A decent WIKI page on the Voodoo is HERE – folks – there is a big pile of “stuff” on SAGE out there so it is going to take a little time to paw through it and put it into a post ( or two – or three ) but I’m working on it – right now it looks like two posts – but you never know . . . There is so much out there on SAGE – the actual “computer” took up 22,000 square feet of floor space – not including support equipment !! Piece of trivia for you folks –
The computer “stuff” – the work stations – the banks of flashing lights etc. – were a few bits and pieces of an AN/SQ-7 computer – totally obsolete and already replaced in 1966 – There is a post coming up on the DEW Line and then one on the Pinetree Line – which both tied into SAGE. All I can say is stay tuned . . .
